    Introduction to Hydroponics

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without the use of soil. Instead plants are grown in an oxygenated nutrient rich solution using an inert growing medium to support the plant. In some cases no growing medium is used at all, just a neoprene ring to support the main stem of the plant.

This all may sound like some kind of space age technology, but in all reality the concept of hydroponics has been around for thousands of years. One of the earliest examples is the Hanging gardens of Babylon in about 600 BC. Research in the 1800s led to many improvements in what was called solution culture at that time. In 1937┬áProfessor William Frederick Gericke of the University of California introduced the term “Hydroponics”. The term was derived from the Greek word “hydros” meaning “water” and “ponos” meaning “labor”.

    Benefits of Hydroponic Gardening

Hydroponic gardening has many advantages over soil gardening when all the conditions are maintained. These advantages include.

    • Faster Growth
    • Bigger Yields
    • No weeds to pull
    • No soil borne diseases
    • Use less water
    • Less space needed
    • Plants can be moved
