When using commercially prepared fertilizers designed specifically for hydroponic use you can usually get away with just following the instructions and changing the solution out often. But,  if you are serious about hydroponics or would like to be able to experiment with your nutrient solution then here are a few tools you should consider buying.

The first is a digital pH meter. It will allow you to check the pH (acidity or basicity) of your solution and make sure it is in the proper range.  Generally for most plants your pH should between 5.5 to 6.5 which is slightly acidic.  If your pH is outside of that range it should be adjusted or your plants could be burned or face a nutrient deficiency due to them not being able to absorb the nutrients from the solution.

The other is a digital TDS meter. A TDS meter measures the Total Dissolved Solids in a solution and displays it in parts per million or ppm. This is how you know how concentrated your solution is. The range of ppm greatly depends on the plant being grown and the fertilizer being used. It is usually somewhere between 500 to 1000 ppm and sometimes even higher.

The price range for both of these meters is anywhere from $20 to $100+ depending on the brand and features. Considering, they will allow you to tweak your mix and figure out how to maximize your yields I would say they are a smart investment.
